Welcome world! Did you see the magnificence on December 16th? Was it a bird? A plane? The north star? No, it was here on earth, a constellation formed by Angelenos far and wide in the monumental showing known as Lightforms. The Pan-Angeleno fair of 2023 brought the greatest creative minds of the city under one dazzling roof, the hope of design made real. Due to inflation, high costs of materials and logistics, Los Angeles's first world fair had no other choice but to be contained to one single exhibition space and all local inventors, designers and artists. Luckily, Rhett Baruch Gallery was able to respond and made a public statement that was short and sweet: “The show must go on!" A new light form emerged seemingly from thin air, Tristan Marsh’s 3D-printed Ptera Lamp made entirely of resin softly glows in the entry, beckoning guests to investigate this new material and form within the fair grounds. All that glitters isn’t gold, or is it? Millions from far and wide came to experience materiality, color, shape, and tones sculpted in glorious design. Unparalleled ingenuity glistening as far as the eye could see. An Eyeful created by Christopher Norman beacons curiosity for the weary travelers, walnut reduced from a single piece of wood and fitted with evocative red glass . A mirage to many onlookers who were given sunglasses just to comprehend the assortment. A spectacle of spectacles. What happened exactly, we will never know. The individual dreams of eleven artists came true to bring a spectacular show that changed everything we knew about lighting design in Los Angeles and abroad. Limits were tested between artist and viewer, was that a wooden bow atop an ethereal orb by Sam Klemick? Or one of the sixteen shining stars in this fairyland of light?
