Gana Art LA is pleased to announce the opening of Anticipation, a solo exhibition of Maria Chang. Maria Chang (b.1981-) is an artist characterized by her thick matière on canvas, continuously varying her style with new subjects and materials to explore the language of the artwork. Chang has continued to cast doubt on the boundaries of standardized genres or forms through her works. Chang completed a uniquely textured canvas using plastering tools, gel stone, and linen instead of general painting tools, studying various materials and media. In other words, the sense of volume of Chang’s canvas represents her unique world of works, which is not easily incorporated into the realms of painting or sculpture. Chang moves her style from figurative to abstract art using her series of works: In Between, created by materials such as plaster and sand, bringing out the volume of grid-shaped works, and Spring Series, which shows drastically applied colors concealed beneath the plaster. The traces left are not captured on canvas as geometrics, but they are expressed as a form getting out of the canvas. On the other hand, the Permeation series, inspired by the harmony of the seven colors of the rainbow without clear boundaries, differentiates itself from her previous works by coloring the canvas as if it were dyed. In her earlier works, the vivid color of a monochromatic tone and the artist’s powerful touch deliver lively energy. Still, in the Permeation series, the pigments of various colors permeate or harmonize, creating a mysterious atmosphere. The exhibition will be on view between January 20th and February 10th at Gana Art Los Angeles (1142 Seward Street).
