Waste. Rubbish. Garbage. Seconds. Junk. Debris.
The unique assortment of works in COLLECTION DAY all relate to these words. They investigate commonly held perceptions of beauty and question what we as humans find valuable in our daily lives. Whether through papier-mâché sculptures constructed of toilet paper or meticulous drawings of yard waste bins overflowing with plant clippings, Cara Lasell Bonewitz presents the unexpected beauty and humor found in the messy leftovers of life. The resulting works are a transplanted approximation of natural beauty limited by the realities of an unnatural environment.
COLLECTION DAY features three series that Bonewitz has developed over the last five years: seaweavings, abstract papier-mâché sculptures, and detailed graphite drawings of yard waste bins. Presenting these seemingly disparate works in the same space for the first time, the exhibition highlights their shared themes of beauty, waste, decay, perception, and nostalgia.
Come by on Saturday, January 27th at 2pm for an artist-led tour of the show, during which Bonewitz will thoroughly address the show's themes, her personal creative interests, and artistic process. The tour will be followed by a Q&A with the artist. The event will last approximately 45 minutes.
