Canepa Selling is pleased to present Hypnopomp, a photography group exhibition showcasing the work of eighteen artists who employ a range of practices. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, February 24th from 6–9pm. Artists in the show include: Farah Al Qasimi, Saskia Baden, Frank Benson, Jennifer Calivas, Asger Carlsen, Zoe Chait, Talia Chetrit, Shannon Ebner, Leigh Ledare, Willa Nasatir, Megan Plunkett, Michael Queenland, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Diane Severin Nguyen, Matthew Spiegelman, Kyle Tata, James Welling, and Barak Zemer. Hypnopomp brings together a collection of works that create physicality for dream-like subject matters that are deeply tethered to our personal and collective perceptions and lived experiences. Featuring works that are dark, warped, and manipulated or recontextualized spaces and machinery, the show comments on an increasingly technocratic world through the use of classic iconography and themes. In resistance to current modes of photography consumption on social media, it asks the viewer to slowly and intentionally engage with each work and each work’s unique schema. The show highlights works across a spectrum of practice and process. From Zoey Chait’s invisible interface between the subject and viewer to Diane Severin Nguyen’s post-production process that makes a synthesis of seemingly organic and inorganic materials, each work engages with a defined methodology that requires an interaction from the viewer. With conceptual works alongside photograph practices rooted in more direct use of the camera, Hypnopomp invites a closer look at the relevance of photography in our current cultural landscape. Hypnopomp is curated by Michael Rashkow. For press inquiries contact: be@larrie.nyc
