bG Gallery at Bergamot Station current exhibition, "Oh You Pretty Things," featuring Salvador Trouble Berlin's captivating abstract and color by number works. Exhibition runs Feb 22, 23 and 24. With Saturday hosting a special event from 3-6. Berlin's series of brushstrokes abstractions began as a playful accident. He originally intended to parody Malevich's famous black square and red square by painting one on top of the other and naming it "Black Square ON Red Square." In this group of works Salvador Trouble Berlin explores textures and forms. He found himself more involved in the brushstrokes than the parody which led to a series of heavily textures pieces. Which in turn led to dimensionality. A desire to free a canvas from its typical shape. In this collection, Berlin continues a Dadaist touch with titles inspired by various ad slogans. For instance, one piece is humorously named "Buy One Get One Half Off." The twist? Berlin prices each half of the painting individually and is bringing a saw to the exhibition. If a buyer desires only one square, he'll cut it in half. About Salvador Trouble Berlin Salvador Trouble Berlin was born in Santa Monica, CA, in a manger. Early on he displayed a passion for the arts. As a child his mother discovered him drawing amidst an unholy mess whereupon he is quoted as having said “I’m sloppy but I’m talented” in what would become a signature defiance of authority. With the emergence of punk rock he soon found a like-minded community and applied his abilities to making flyers, tee shirts, and album covers. Never formally schooled in art, or much else for that matter, the intervening years were those of experimentation. Drawn more to vintage advertising than traditional artistic subject matter, he found himself to have an affinity for pop art. Turning the common into fine art became a driving force. As a self-described Pop Dadaist, he believes that art should be first funny and if at all possible nice to look at. Join us with the artist Berlin, this Saturday from 3-6, as he paints by numbers, or is it really the numbers? Audience is welcomed to join in.
