Julius Caesar, one of the most famous individuals of antiquity, has received much attention from scholars in recent years. What we know about his influence in Rome and his wide political, cultural, and religious impact is largely from written sources, but archeology also offers clues. In this talk, Rubina Raja, director of the Centre for Urban Network Evolutions at Aarhus University, revisits Caesar’s legacy in light of archaeological discoveries made during the recent excavations of Caesar’s Forum, undertaken from 2017–2023. This collaborative project exposed new areas of Caesar's Forum in the heart of Rome, revealing features of the city’s development across three millennia.
Rubina Raja is professor of classical archaeology and art and director of Centre for Urban Network Evolutions at Aarhus University, Denmark. She heads several research projects focusing on sculptural traditions and urban development in the eastern Mediterranean. Raja is an experienced field archaeologist having headed projects in the Middle East and Italy. Her research focuses on urban and societal developments as well as networks from the Hellenistic to the medieval periods, iconography, and religion in Antiquity with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean and Rome.
