Hybridity in art is defined as the mixing of two or more elements to form another. This thought process can be expanded beyond material physicality to notions of cultural and conceptual contemplation. Here, hybridity extends beyond the physical realm, encompassing the cultural narratives and complex identities that weave through the social fabric of Los Angeles in particular . This show attempts to redefine and challenge traditional methods of art making and transcend conventional modality. The concept of hybridity can have both positive and negative connotations. By incorporating collaboration and cooperation alongside perceived negative connotations like the irregular or freakish, “In Hybrid Moments” initiates a dialogue about the multifaceted nature of hybridity in art and its role in the contemporary milieu. Hybridity is not without its complexities. It walks a tightrope between innovation and subversion, beauty and the bizarre. The irregular, the unexpected, often evoke mixed emotions – fascination and ambivalence, admiration and skepticism. This exhibition recognizes these multifaceted layers, embracing the perceived "freakishness" as a catalyst for dialogue. The show combines elements of installation, collage, sculpture, painting, and digital projection, along with musical and performative arts. This combination of traditional art forms and new genres intertwined in physical space allows the viewer to observe the work as well as interact with it. Through playful exploration, the works and participants excavate the true essence of hybridity in art. It delves into its role within the contemporary landscape, where established norms are constantly challenged and redefined. The very act of experiencing the exhibition becomes its own involvement in this dialogue. Viewers are no longer passive observers but active participants. This show shrugs off the rigid confines of "this or that." and revels in the messiness of "both/and."
