The language of drawing is translated throughout Charlotte Edey’s tactile, mixed media practice. Mark making and gesture are explored through extensive hand-embroidery and beading on tapestry. Comparable to hatching and stippling, these processes forge direct relationships between line, thread, and surface. Her jacquard weavings are hand embellished with thousands of glass seed beads and freshwater pearls. This latest body of work weaves together organic materials including crystal, moonstone, opalite, obsidian, onyx, lava, and topaz, giving a luminescent quality to the surface of her ethereal compositions. - Gloria Klein's self-developed systems and processes to experiment with color and compositions creating intricate patterns that range from completely chaotic to highly structured geometric grids and every variation in between. Collectively, these hundreds of intricate almost interlocking diagonals hum with musical resonance, rhythm, and unexpected incidents that result from the layering of intersecting and competing systems. Algorithmic, they read as frequencies, digital signals, or source lines of code and explore the interplay of order and disruption, formulas, and failures of the very systems she was creating to distribute color applications.
