Please join us for the Discussions in Exhibitions - an event organized by Southland Institute as part of their ongoing public events series. This discussion will gather within "The wilds of epiphenomena" curated by Kristin Posehn at Phase Gallery. This is an in-person event. Featured artists: Scott Benzel, Tanya Brodsky, Alice Könitz, Rita McBride, Kristin Posehn. ___ An epiphenomena is a second-order phenomenon. In the philosophy of mind, it relates to a theory whereby matter gives rise to mental phenomena and consciousness. Each work in The wilds of epiphenomena explores and probes a world beyond the ordinary, a world of second-order and higher phenomena. With materials ranging from dry ice to currency and electronics, these artworks give rise to physical, imaginal, and conceptual shape-shifting, hinting at the mutable nature of mind and presence. ____ Discussions in Exhibitions has been invested since 2010 in considering ticketless exhibitions, and their limits, through publicly initiated discussions occurring from within. As a sporadic series of unsanctioned gatherings, the aim continues to be providing opportunities for situational dialogue on the choices which compose shows and characterize the work inside them, stimulated by the diverse perspectives of those in attendance. By extension an inquiry into, and representation of, what is public in these spaces becomes tangible in the process.
