Fake it until you make it is what happens in the art world these days, where judgement is based less on the stuff than the story. And the only acceptable story today is about novelty or difference, which is always easier to recognize than goodness. Many say “I know what I like” to defend their preferences when difference is their only real criterion. So it goes: the contemporary artist just has to keep on working as if, until the story finds them.
