Developed and curated by Los Angeles-based artist Anne Kim, "Voices of Experience" is an intergenerational and multilingual interdisciplinary project that aims to amplify the rich narratives of community elders residing near the Goethe-Institut in MacArthur Park. Selected from this vibrant community, four elders: Cathy Yi, Fransisca Santiago Carranza, Sabina Guzman, and Yang Ja Kim, will participate in a collaborative choreographic process. The culmination of this endeavor will be a storytelling exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles Project space that integrates film, dance, audio, and visual arts. “Voices of Experience” includes special live performances, workshops, and features photographs and video interviews from KYCC’s Koreatown Storytelling Program, offering a compelling exploration of our elders’ diverse experiences and perspectives. Admission is free. All ages are welcome. This immersive experience features performances constructed around music, dance, and film, incorporating visual art, video interviews, found objects, and other everyday items which are significant to the lives of the participants. These physical items enrich the performances and serve as physical manifestations of each elders’ story. Each participant tells us their story day after day, performing the duties and roles we have come to expect of them and perhaps take for granted. Roles and duties such as motherhood, domestic chores, and assimilation to American life, to activities such as selling afternoon snacks to middle school students after school, volunteering to clean up litter from MacArthur Park, and even taking the metro: these performances are swallowed into the abyss of “everyday life”, and rarely heard. Through collaboration, this project seeks to amplify these voices and provide tools for them to create using their own narratives, and thus share their unique experiences to the public. By giving space to voices that are regularly silenced and infrequently developed artistically, we can all learn from their VOICES OF EXPERIENCE. VOICES OF EXPERIENCE is on view at the Goethe-Institut from June 20th - July 19th, 2024
