ARTIST SPOOKY HARRIS GOES 'SLEEPLESS' FOR DORADO 806 PROJECTS’ INAUGURAL 24-HOUR RESIDENCY Harris to complete all works in one day inside space culminating in opening night celebration on July 27 Dorado 806 Projects : David “Spooky” Harris will be the first artist featured in our 24-Hour Residency solo series, set to debut on Saturday, July 27. The series showcases artists undertaking the challenge of creating immersive installations within a 24-hour period leading up to the opening night. Harris, a renowned mixed media artist from Los Angeles, was recently featured on the cover of South Bay Magazine and praised for making: “an indelible mark on the canvas of contemporary art.” Dorado 806 Projects, an emerging Santa Monica artist-run alternative space, will hand the keys over to Harris on Friday, July 26th at noon, reclaiming them the following day at the same time. Harris will have 24 hours to make the show. The opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, July 27th at 6pm at Dorado 806 Projects (806 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA). Harris’s exhibit, entitled 'Sleepless', will explore and demystify the complex process of artistic creation. By enveloping the gallery space—walls, onto some floor space, and ceiling—in paper and painting directly onto it using black sumi ink with pops of color, the installation will invite viewers into the artist's intricate journey. The space will be filled with words, imagery, and abstract forms, offering a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the artist’s mind. In addition, the exhibition will provide a distinctive interactive opportunity for visitors to choose and purchase art by the square inch, dynamically transforming the gallery space visually. As the exhibit concludes, the reserved pieces will be extracted for the buyers, leading to a further evolved and fragmented rendition of the original artwork. This participatory approach challenges conventional ideas of art ownership and underscores the fluid, evolving essence of artistry, empowering viewers to influence the narrative even after the exhibition wraps up. Harris's work is celebrated for pushing artistic boundaries with its captivating mixture of humor, wit, and the macabre. Transitioning from a background in theatre and television, he has emerged as a prominent figure in the vibrant art scenes of Los Angeles, New York City, and Joshua Tree, encouraging audiences to embrace the unconventional and discover humor in the shadows. Known for his unique black-and-white pieces that skillfully blend pop culture with irreverence, Harris also creates striking large-scale ultra-bright abstract figuratives. Through his spontaneous and introspective processes, he delves into personal narratives of self-discovery, trauma, conquests, and the nuances of everyday life, believing in the beauty seen from a distance and aiming to provide healing and insight to viewers. Amelie Laurice and Meghan DeRoma, founders, curators, and fellow artists at Dorado 806 Projects, selected Harris as the inaugural artist for the 24-Hour Residency series following their collaboration in a group show in 2022. Dorado 806 Projects is a California coast-based arts and culture collective empowering established and emerging artists. This artist-run studio space is a working art studio. The curators focus on ideas that explore our relationship with the natural world, diverse voices, experiential activations, and experimentation. Since 2021, they have hosted a variety of exhibitions, featured the work of over 150 local and international artists, and hosted cultural activations to bring new perspectives to the beach cities of Los Angeles.  For more information on David “Spooky” Harris, please visit: https://spookyharris.com/ and on IG @spookyharris.
