MODEST common is thrilled to announce Hannah Knight Leighton’s solo exhibition, The Walker. Large-scale and a freestanding textile piece will be on display, along with more recent smaller panel works in pencil.
The selected pieces are fractured, twisted, yet full of resilience, The Walker explores the paradoxes of inner and outer selves in relation to others amidst an overstimulated world. Between pencil, wood panel, yarn and monks cloth, Leighton’s work is in perpetual transit. Always walking, never lost or found.
The decision to switch over to pencil is dictated by an injury. No longer able to physically make large-scale textiles due to tendonitis, Leighton turns to the pencil to catch and explore the dualities within linguistic order, psychological perception of space, controlled chaos, artificial landscapes and gentle ambiguity. How can color, shape, and composition disrupt their own eruptions? How might a painting break open to reveal its vibrant innards?
Leighton remains fascinated by the way small accumulations build and amount to something substantial. A wiry cherry pattern runs parallel to and against itself, like visuals that exist in the space in between thoughts.
