Persons Unknown is proud to present the first West Coast solo exhibition of Tennessee-based painter Katie Thompson Murphy. “A Part of You Pours Out of Me is a meditation on the vivid nature of green and an exploration of my sisterly relationships. This impulse to stay and to swim around in an idea, a color, a relationship or a song is where painting becomes poetry in my practice. Painting becomes evidence and a record of my interior experience as well as marks of time from my embodied practice. Here, I explore the strength of my sisters and the support that I find in them as I create new realities.” — KTM Katie Murphy holds a BFA in Studio Art from East Tennessee State University and is currently pursuing an MFA in Studio Art from Maryland Institute College of Art. Murphy is a painter working with ideas of personal feminism. She grew up in Mississippi where cultural norms and expectations had a profound impact on her and continue to provide avenues to questioning and rethinking contemporary womanhood. Questions of propriety and inhabited space inform her expressive figurative paintings. Murphy currently lives and works in Johnson City, TN.
