Drica Lobo's solo, PARALLEL REALITIES, debuts at Shockboxx Gallery in Hermosa Beach on Saturday, November 16 at 6pm. ShockBoxx Gallery serves as a pivotal center in the South Bay for artists, curators, collectors, and art lovers to unite and promote the arts. Established in March 2017 by Mike Collins and Laura Schuler, ShockBoxx is celebrated for its solo and group exhibitions that showcase a variety of emerging and established artists from all over the world, offering a continuous flow of fresh artistic influence.
PARALLEL REALITIES invites viewers to enter a realm where dualities coexist—light and dark, vulnerability and strength, loss and discovery. This collection emerged from a deeply personal journey created during the artist's recent residency in France. Drica channeled her grief over her father’s passing into layered, raw expressions of color and form. Through fragmented textures and clashing hues, each piece captures the chaotic beauty of grief, a portal into both sorrow and hope.
The installations echo our shared experience of duality—moments of conflict leading to harmony and contrast that allow us to feel fully alive. Interactive elements, like colored glasses and ripple effects, guide the viewer to consider how personal perception shapes reality. Just as one can choose to see the world through a specific lens, our understanding of life shifts based on the perspectives we embrace.
Ultimately, PARALLEL REALITIES explores contrast as a necessary force for experience. In accepting the darkness, we find ourselves reaching for the light; in discovering one side of ourselves, we unlock its counterpart. Each emotion and experience holds value as they guide us toward deeper connections, not only with ourselves but with the world around us.
Drica is a Brazilian-born, California-based artist who makes modern landscapes, transforming familiar vistas into an optimistic scenario, manipulating shapes through an ethereal gradient layer that directs the eye to an imaginary field of possibilities.Shifting between traveling and working in her studio, Drica creates pieces representing freedom of mind & dreamlike state. Her fascination with art began as a small child, but it wasn't until she moved to California that her art had a new beginning.
She currently lives and works in Hermosa Beach, and her art is in public and private collections worldwide.
