Inspired by the metaphorical veil described by W.E.B. Du Bois in his book The Souls of Black Folk—the barrier between Black and White people in the United States—Beneath the Veil offers a lens into the beauty and solace of Copeland’s experience growing up in South Central, Los Angeles. South Central, a world renowned neighborhood with a complex history, is depicted in dreamlike paintings accompanied by mixed media installations. These works are described by the artist as a somatic response to her observations of her beloved hometown. Beneath the Veil serves as an archival memory of a city currently facing rapid transition and acts as a container for the embodied experience of the artist herself.
