ARTIST STATEMENT
First the fall,
Then the recovery from the fall
Both are the grace of God
- Julian of Norwich
In 2020, I made my artistic debut as Ty Rex with 'Rumors of War', eight piano improvisations with photographic work and film. This was my first statement and reclamation of self, after a 25-year upbringing in a religious cult to which I lost my family and community. From those years came spiritual initiations toward a private spirituality, a non-duality guided by physics and relativity. Through improvised states on piano, a lifelong practice which evolved to gestural art and writing, these teachers became rational medicines for my inherited neurodivergence, trauma and addiction to the extremities of black and white certainty.
My mental and physical condition ultimately collapsed in 2021 after years of survival. Catatonic and bed-ridden, I surrendered to a new life of full-time recovery. From this Fall was birthed 'Movement, Demos from Rigidity & Recovery' – a sparse collection of improvisations on a borrowed piano, finally released this October. It’s taken those years to create the work you now see. These drawings were my writing and early movement practice; the photographs, portals to healing worlds; the hanging sculptures, a computation of balance and non-dualist application; the procedural art, re-interpretive studies of myself. Altogether, a journal of recovery.
My intent is to show my chronology of artistic development as a vehicle of recovery, expression, and inner strength – an evolution of identity from survivorship to vitality, beauty and being. This exhibition marks the beginning of a memoir project – a gift to myself for the gift of life on the eve of my 30th birthday. I am still unable to write my story without much difficulty, but as I piece together mine, I hope you catch a glimpse of your own. I hope that whatever you fear as dark becomes brighter, more curious, more wondrous. I hope you find within yourself a deep and unshakable home.
