Alex Israel’s paintings frequently draw on pop culture and entertainment, with an air of nostalgia, fantasy, escapism, joy, and humor. For his new solo exhibition at Gagosian is titled Noir, which marks the LA-based artist’s first hometown show in nearly a decade, he will showcase the City of Angels at night. Featuring what he calls “third-tier monuments” – his new body of work highlights institutions that may be familiar to locals and frequent visitors, spots filled with lesser-known LA lore. Examples include the unique architecture of gas stations, as well as liquor stores, tattoo parlor facades, and even the famed Troubadour music venue. Alex Israel’s Noir is on view starting January 9, 2025.
