The H Foundation for the Arts is proud to announce "Work in Progress – The Idea of 'Asia,'" an open-studio curatorial initiative spotlighting the evolving creative processes of contemporary Asian art. Curated by Ann Shi, the series explores diverse and shifting identities within Asia and its intersections with the global context.
The first installment, "WIP: Four Takes on the Changing Faces of Asia," features artists Li Zeng, Haniko Zahra, and Zhang Xiangxi. The fourth studio space is offered to artists who have been impacted the recent wildfire crisis, who have lost their studios and creative spaces accesses, and granted based on need-basis. Access is also offered to members of AAPIAN, an art community that engage with the complexities of identity and representation through their evolving works.
The second installment, "WIP: Four Iterations of Literati Traditions," showcases Cheyann Washington, Diana Che, Liu Tianlian, and Zuo Zhengyao with more announcement to come.
The curatorial vision frames the idea of Asia as fluid, transcending traditional boundaries of geography, ethnicity, and political definitions. In the words of curator Ann Shi, "The 'Idea of Asia' thrives in the spaces of nuance and ambiguity, embodying a progressive, inclusive vision of identity and creativity. Through this program, we aim to celebrate the intersections of innovation and heritage while challenging conventional notions of Asian art."
This program will continue biannually, providing a platform for artists to showcase and sell their work while engaging with the community through workshops, discussions, and open-studio events.
