NOON Projects is thrilled to present Cream Sand, Maija Luutonen’s first solo exhibition in the United States, opening February 15, 2025.
Luutonen is known for her innovative approach to painting on paper, often working on large-scale surfaces that blur the boundaries between image, object, and space. Her practice embraces impermanence, layering hand-painted elements with digital processes, printmaking, and sculptural interventions to explore perception, materiality, and abstraction. While her past works often incorporated folded paper and modular compositions, Cream Sand marks a significant shift—returning to canvas and linen for the first time in two decades. This new series deepens her engagement with the body, exploring sensory experience and ephemeral textures, creating a poetic visual space where the physical and imagined converge.
Luutonen (b. 1978, Finland) has exhibited widely across Europe, with solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Pasquart (Switzerland), Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki), and Titanik (Turku, Finland). A founding member of SIC, an artist-run space in Helsinki, her work is held in major collections, including Kiasma and the Helsinki Art Museum.
Cream Sand opens Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 6–8 PM at NOON Projects, 951 Chung King Road, Los Angeles, and will be on view through March 29, 2025.
