Michael Kohn Gallery is proud to announce its 40th Anniversary Exhibition, opening February 19 through April 4, 2025. The group exhibition will showcase works across disciplines by prominent artists, including Keith Haring, Chiffon Thomas, Alicia Adamerovich, Matha Alf, and more. In addition, a portion of the gallery will be transformed into a theater to premiere the restoration of Bruce Conner’s THE WHITE ROSE, 1967.
In 1985, Michael Kohn Gallery, MKG, opened its doors on Robertson Boulevard in West Hollywood with a show titled “New York’s Finest.” Having recently moved back to his native Los Angeles after nearly five years in New York as an art critic and graduate student at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, Kohn chose a group of artists from New York for the gallery’s inaugural exhibition, including Kenny Scharf and Futura 2000.
Over the subsequent years, MKG organized solo and group shows for some of the most important names in modern and contemporary art: Peter Halley, Christopher Wool, Richard Tuttle, Marsden Hartley, Mark Innerst, Mark Tansey, Joan Nelson, Andy Warhol, Richard Pettibone, "Twombly and Basquiat,” “Morandi and Ryman,” Dennis Hopper, Joe Goode, Bruce Conner, Lita Albuquerque, Wallace Berman, Mark Ryden, Alex Katz, James Rosenquist, Gonzalo Lebrija and many more. Over the last decade, MKG has continued to renew its commitment to emerging and mid-career artists with a global perspective through a dynamic exhibitions program with solo shows by Will Monk, Eddie Martinez, María Berrío, Ilana Savdie, Nir Hod, Li Hei Di, and Shiwen Wang.
MKG’s four-decade dedication to artists and art history is evident in its wide-ranging curatorial vision, which features artwork from 16th-century Italian Mannerist paintings and drawings to Cezanne and Picasso works on paper; American Modernists Hartley and Dove; Minimalists Donald Judd, Carl Andre, and John McLaughlin; and contemporary artists who have shaped the Los Angeles art scene over the last 40 years.
As the Los Angeles art scene continues to grow immensely, Michael Kohn and the eponymous gallery have remained a leading tastemaker in the city’s evolving cultural scene and the art world at large. Beyond the gallery walls, Kohn has been a dedicated advocate for the arts, contributing to the cultural enrichment of the Los Angeles arts community and the careers of the artists he represents.
The 40th Anniversary Exhibition will be on view from February 19 through April 4, 2025.
