Making sense is hard work and the work is never finished—Into the Hamper’s Belly presents sculpture, installation, and painting that revel in ongoing processes of accumulation and transmutation. With objects and imagery that tend towards each other, coalescing and reaching, these works from Inga Hendrickson, Rachel Elizabeth Jones, Caitlin Servilio, and Corrine Yonce conjure a sense of porous fermentation across worlds. Precarity and strength mix, mingle, and meld as forms emerge in cardboard, cement, pigment, foam, silicone, wax, plastic, sand: a mound of briny clamshells at the ocean’s edge gesture towards the un-containability of the sea and the logic of its lifeforms, organ-like vessels hold and withhold, hands and rays reach out, imperfect circles reflect imperfect cycles that nonetheless possess a center. With an eye towards metabolization and the dubious illusion of control, the works of Into the Hamper’s Belly cast aside fixedness in favor of welcoming interconnection, in its messy, permeable glory, to take shape.
