“Replace Cartridge Soon” is an exhibition of experimental works on paper by David John Attyah. Outfitted with an old-school Xerox copier, a roll of black masking tape, and a glue stick, Attyah integrates hand-drawn elements into snippets of found, cut, and re-xeroxed photos. The exhibition is fueled by Attyah’s longing for a former time - a period that mashed up sexual awakening and political turmoil, located somewhere in the 1990s.
The artworks are made of scratchy drawn elements, emo-lite motifs, taped zine styling, and cut up photos. There are appearances of disco balls, tarot cards, beating hearts, and faded TV stars - symbols which Attyah can’t logically explain.
David John Attyah is an artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. He spends his free time and most of his money in a sparse, frigid studio thinking about drawing, queer politics, embodiment, handmade things, and his unconscious self. After many years as a professional and conscientious artist and art educator, he is currently working on being utterly unremarkable, pursing his life dream of fading off into brutal obscurity.
