In Casa Monstruos first-generation Central-American artist and designer, Jasser Membreno, draws inspiration from the 80’s cult films he relied on as a child, merging autonomic creative processes with monsters, surrealism, and elements of Latin American and European mythology. The gruesome and whimsical monsters of Membreno’s drawings and paintings step into and out of worlds that ask them to assimilate, find authenticity, and give and receive compassion. After attaining a B.A. in Film and Video Animation from CalArts, Membreno developed projects for Disney and entertainment industry companies which evolved into his establishment of Casa Monstrous, a multimedia art and storytelling series. His work has been exhibited at La Luz de Jesus Gallery and LAMAG and he’s led programs for LA Commons and Arts for Healing and Justice Network. Membreno is the child of Central American immigrants and was born, raised and is currently based in South Los Angeles.
