SANDY KUPFER // SHADOW BOXING is an exhibition of new paintings investigating the inner workings of society and the artist therein, but also instigates and challenges the core ethos of each. The works exude a sense of urgency, painted in a feverish manner – while also holding space for a delicacy of intent behind the marks made on canvas. Sandy utilizes portraiture to sharpen a focal point of meaning derived from topics spanning pop culture and personal narratives to mythological iconography and story telling. She utilizes both blissful expression and twisted intensity in these paintings which allow the viewer to congregate in a space where there are frequent shifts in reality. Kupfer exudes a charge in these paintings which results in an intensity of emotive feeling that surmounts any logical or preemptive belief system when engaged with willingly. She aims to bring the viewer into a realm with each painting acting as a portal into something intense that offers an immersive viewing experience. The cheerful color scheme allows one to digest this fierce way of painting in a fashion which acts as a helping hand to actually engage, not just to perceive. This series of works sees Sandy utilizing gestural iconography which walks the line of figurative and abstract, to shadow box with her own perspective’s on the nature of the psyche, spirit, and human bodily experience — in an attempt to transmute a belief and feeling into paintings which can unify and challenge instantaneously. SANDY KUPFER (B1999, EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN) lives and works in Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA AND is an artist with a focus in painting, drawing, and tattooing. She holds a BA from Occidental College with a major in painting. Sandy received her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2025. Her work has been exhibited at BIRDHOUSE, Ceradon Gallery, Bolsky Gallery, Wienholt Projects, Devout Gallery, Neo LA Gallery, amongst others.
