Keystone Gallery presents Nothing Ever Happens Until It Does, a new solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Joel Zuercher. It’s his third show with the gallery, and his first since the Eaton Canyon fire in January 2025 destroyed his home and much of his archives. The work in the show reflects a truth Zuercher now knows firsthand: life can shift from calm to catastrophe in an instant. Using found materials, paint, and dyes, Zuercher builds layered surfaces, then tears, scrapes, and peels them apart through dé-collage, revealing hidden fragments beneath. The process mirrors the unpredictability of disaster—the act of destruction giving way to unexpected clarity. In the wake of the fire, these pieces took on new meaning, speaking to loss, resilience, and the strange pull of watching chaos unfold. Nothing Ever Happens Until It Does is both a record of what was lost and a testament to what survives.
