Salt, as both mineral and metaphor anchors my research and creative practice. Rooted in salt exploration, my journey has expanded across Lusophone West Africa and the Caribbean, tracing the layered histories of colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and cultural memory. Cape Verde, the first African territory colonized by Portugal, occupies a pivotal place in African diasporic history. Similarly, the island of Saint Maarten divided between Dutch and French rule, offers a unique Caribbean counterpoint, surrounded by English-, French-,Dutch-, Spanish-, and Portuguese-speaking countries. These two salt-shaped sites serve as case studies within a broader exploration of the intersections between history, identity, and art. Across the Global South, I’ve witnessed a growing tension: artists often stewards of cultural heritage, are increasingly pressured to produce commodified “tourist art” to survive. This trend threatens authentic storytelling and risks silencing the very voices that carry these histories. Through sculpture, installation, photography, performance, writing, and community engagement, I aim to preserve and share my stories not only through academic inquiry, but also through accessible and enduring artistic expression. Over the past eight years, my research has taken me across the United States, and into Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone regions of Africa and the Caribbean. As this research phase concludes, my focus turns to the creation of a compelling body of work, including visual art, a documentary, and a book, that reflects the richness of African diasporic culture through a contemporary lens. I invite your support in preserving these narratives and amplifying the voices of those who document them. This exhibition presents a collection of 33 pieces, drawn from 17 years of artmaking and historical documentation. Each work is inspired by social activism and community engagement, oIering a meaningful addition to your collection.
