Lacquerware has for centuries been one of Japan’s most admired art forms, revered worldwide for its deep gloss, exquisite decorations, and durability. On January 1, 2024, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture in central Honshu, causing severe damage throughout the region. The city of Wajima – famed for its centuries-old Wajima-nuri lacquerware tradition – was among the hardest hit, with many lacquer workshops and tools destroyed, deeply affecting the local artisan community. As part of the ongoing recovery efforts, three Wajima-nuri artisans – Kyoko Shinohara, Kazuyori Hikimochi, and Akane Seiya – supported by The Rotary Foundation – will travel to Los Angeles for a four-day program led by faculty at ArtCenter College of Design. Following the program, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, in collaboration with its very own WAZA Shop, will host a special two-day public event celebrating Wajima-nuri. The program will include a special display of one-of-a-kind lacquerware pieces, all available for purchase. It will also feature a live demonstration of the Chinkin (gold-inlay engraving) and Maki-e (gold and silver lacquer decoration) techniques, both rarely seen in the United States. Guests can also participate in a Chinkin workshop to engrave a simple design onto chopsticks. This free, hands-on activity takes about 30 minutes and is limited to six participants per day on a first-come, first-served basis. Free and open to the public, the event offers a unique opportunity to connect with these talented lacquer artisans and experience this revered craft firsthand. This initiative not only highlights the artistry and cultural significance of Wajima-nuri, but also fosters international collaboration and supports the region’s recovery through cultural engagement and global awareness.
