Out of Bounds: Dis Place is an exhibition which focuses on the discourse between race, displacement, and the body. Inspired by Katherine McKittrick’s book Demonic Grounds, the exhibition seeks to explore the realm of alternative possibility through contemporary art. Through mediums such as craft, sculpture, painting, and other mixed media forms, Out of Bounds supports and contorts the concept of space and bodily forms to open conversations surrounding truth, reality, and history. Utilizing work from Black femme and non-binary makers, this show highlights how the Black experience, from the physical body to alternative space, can create spiritual possibilities and realms through identity, resistance, and deconstruction. Throughout the exhibition, motifs such as bodily separation, reorganization of physical space, and use of material all pose the question: How does our existence inform us about what we mean to the world? The Black femme experience, throughout the diaspora, has historically held an alternate life, one where new truths are discovered, new histories are explained, and culture is created. Using the meaning of both Caribbean English and the description of liminal space, Dis Place speaks to the notion of identifying, moving, and reclaiming space, whether liminal or physical. Out of Bounds: Dis Place is in conjunction with the 2025 SUR Biennial, focusing on “Art of the South”. With the participation of Black artists from the south of many countries across the diaspora, the exhibition highlights the importance of representation, alternative forms, and artistic possibility.
