Coming in the early years of the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle), the win restored a sense of pride and unity to a society emerging from devastation and moral catastrophe, giving rise to the phrase “Wir sind wieder wer”—“We are somebody again.” This evening with the daughter of player Horst Eckel explores how that triumph helped shape West Germany’s democratic and cultural renewal.
