Meditations Between the Soil and the Stars offers reflections and interpretations of what the artist encounters in his daily life. For Crespo, each of these moments plays a significant role in his comprehension of the Universe. Moments – from the seemingly mundane to those deeply profound – he finds himself cogitating and meditating on, in order to understand what these experiences mean in the greater scheme of existence. Each artwork is not only a vehicle and mechanism for understanding Crespo’s philosophical considerations, but they provide viewers an access point for their own meditations on life, as well. Everyday people return to serve as his inspiration, and are now united with familiar symbols in the artist’s visual lexicon. Birds, the moon, clouds, the earth the heavens and more are woven into visual narratives that are equal parts surreal, prosaic, earthly, and metaphysical. Inspired by a series of original poems written by Crespo himself, the paintings, and the few sketches included, are elevated to a higher level of purpose. Each work is transcendent, being enigmatic in its subject matter by drawing you within and outside its given tale; inciting introspection and a greater observation of the outside world. The exhibition features over 20 new paintings and half a dozen framed sketches grouped into themed sections. Each section leads with one of Crespo’s poems etched onto a wood panel. Throughout the gallery, select poems – narrated by the artist – can be heard playing; and are available for download via QR code. A book featuring all 21 poems by the artist has been published by Bermudez Projects Editions, and is available in a limited edition run of 25. A special artist edition, which includes one original artwork by the artist is available in an edition of 6. Meditations Between the Soil and the Stars reaffirms Emmanuel Crespo’s quest to uncover meaning in his own life, allowing viewers into his world and experience these deeply contemplative narratives. With each artwork – and now poems – serving as a personal meditation guide, the artist invites all of us to ponder our own existence. And, hopefully gets us closer to some answers as we make our way through our own journeys.
