In Daniel Joseph Martinez’s words, Divine Violence functions as“a typology of every organization in the world that uses violenceor aggression to fulfill its political ideology.” The installationfeatures panels on which political organizations are handwrittenin black lettering against gold paint. Each represents diversepolitical and ideological modes of thinking and activity, i.e.Islamist groups, Ugandan insurgent constituencies, right-wingIsraeli factions. Martinez’s constructed sculptural databaseoperates as a system of symbolic exchange, linking the luxuryof gold to the mechanisms of power and resistance within global capitalism under the guise of wealth, power, and religion. Divine Violence was first exhibited at the 2008 Whitney Biennial.Divine Violence will be exhibited as a counterpoint to Martinez’s major site-specific works at LACMA. Each work, as symbolically-charged installations, engage with the dialogue ofpower through sociopolitical critique and strategies.
